Informational Writing

During the second quarter we are focusing on informational writing.  We have been incorporating writing into our social studies and science units.  Part of being an informative writer, is organizing your writing in a way that is easy to understand.  We are working on writing informative paragraphs with clear topic sentences, supporting details, and closing sentences.  As we begin to write longer informative reports, we will also be using subheadings.

You may reinforce what we are learning in class by sharing the newspaper, magazine articles, or other informational texts that you are reading at home.  If there is a topic you and your child share interest in, you might even help your child research the topic online or through research at the local library.  You may be surprised by how much fun you have sharing that experience!

Take a Time Out for Writing

Each night I take a few minutes to write in my journal.  I write about things that have happened during my day and how I am feeling, or  I make up my own story or poem.  Some days I write pages and pages, while other days I only write a few lines.  It's a relaxing and fun way to practice my writing skills and helps me become a better writer.  If you had a journal of your own, what would you write about today?
